How Debussy Tells the Legend of the Sunken Cathedral on the Piano

According to the ancient Breton legend, a cathedral submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, occasionally rises up from the sea, to the sounds of chanting, bells, and the organ. In this episode of Bach@Home pianist Magdalena Baczewska talks about the musical devices Debussy used to capture this legend on the piano. The composer continuously pushes the envelope of the musical language, while paying respect to the tradition of his Medieval predecessors.
